promoting sustainable livelihoods

The Foundation competes in 24 hour bike race to raise awareness and money.

Thursday, May 18th, 2006 (Events)

The Foundation’s President and Board member, Marc Dreyfors, will compete along with 4 other team members from the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) and Triangle Biodiesel. “This will be an exciting challenge and we hope to raise awareness about environmental education, climate change and alternative energy,” says participant Dreyfors. The event will be held at the Olympic Bike Course, and will run from noon, Saturday May 20 to Sunday, the 21st. Team “Wanderlust” has a high caliber of participants. The team will be anchored by Morgan Crawford of Triangle Biodiesel, Inc., who has won numerous mountain bike races before. Over 20 teams will compete on the 8.5 mile 12,000 ft elevation change circuit, taking approximately 1 hour per round and possible slightly longer at night. “Good equipment, proper hydration, temperature and clothes management will be essential,” states team Captain Elizabeth Gellespie, NCCAT. The Foundation will try to gain attention and some financial support for its educational efforts. Support from local businesses will be requested.

Team Wanderlust came in 3rd in its coed 5 person division and 11th overall. Morgan had the fastest day and night lap times and Marc’s times were comparable to Morgan’s, even though he tried to race using the “head over heal/gravity” technique over a rock obstacle on the granite face section, and had the $200 “ghetto” bike. “It was both terrifying and exhilarating, careening down rock and root infested trails on the edge,” said Mr. Dreyfors. “The night portion was like a video game/hallucination.” No worse from the wear, he finished the race babling something about climate change, biodiesel trucks for Granny Gear and mobile PV units for the music. Granny gear did have an awesome on-demand shower and are talking about recycling at the next event. Morgan saw a large copperhead and Marc saw a baby black racer on the course as they were so fast, they had plenty of time to sightsee on their laps.
